US Hwy 24 passes through Buena Vista on its way to Leadville running parallel to the Arkansas River at times. On the other side of the Arkansas River runs a dirt road on the old train route. As we traveled down this route we drove through 4 consecutive tunnels that still bear the smoke stains from the old steam engines. This river is very popular in the summer time for water sports such rafting, canoeing and kayaking and there are many outfitters in the area. After Labor Day the rafting business dies off, but there are still hardy kayakers that thread the rapids. Another popular outdoor sport is rock climbing. We had the opportunity to watch a man scaling a rock wall. He looked like an ant crawling up the huge boulder. A famous landmark along this road is called "Elephant Rock". You can see the resemblance. Many of the trees along the river were showing their fall colors.
On Saturday we drove about 25 miles to Salida to visit Wal-Mart as it started raining. It was a very cool day with no sun peeking out. On our way back home we saw this in the distance.
By the time we had arrived in Buena Vista we could not see the mountains because of the clouds and storms. The next morning we woke up to this. What a beautiful sight.
