We met Cousin Janet at her house today and she drove us through the Lexington/Versailles countryside to view the vast horse farms in the area. The leaves are starting to change. The countryside was beautiful with the manicured pastures and wood fencing. There were several old mansions that were Pre-cival war and well kept. Many of the massive size buildings were horse barns rather than houses. All of them had three cupolas which is traditional for the horse barns of this area. Many of these farms have been family owned and passed down through the years, but recently there are some large corporations which have bought up old farms and adjoining property. Some owners are sheiks from Dubai. Many are owned by famous personalities such as Johnny Depp and William Shatner. We sure don't want to forget one of the noteworthy landmarks of the area. It is a large castle on a hill that was started 25 years ago.(see the slide show) It has been sitting vacant for many years but a company has recently purchased it to be used as a bed and breakfast. Anyone interested at $3000 a night? Janet also took us to a quaint small town, Midway, which has not changed much since the 1800s. We also went to an apple orchard and had some apple donuts and experienced a hay ride around the property. Besides apples they sold pumpkins, gourds, berries and grapes which are all grown on the property. We enjoyed watching the children playing on the giant slide going down on burlap sacks. They had a unique playground. We managed to avoid the heavy traffic as this was the first day of races at Keenland Park. They had a big turnout.
We stopped at the Pisgah Presbyterian Church where Janet is a member. It was founded in 1784. It had beautiful stained glass windows. We walked in the cemetery and located several American Revolution soldier's graves. There was a lot of history there.
We returned to Aunt Marian's house for supper and a nice visit.
