On Wednesday April 27th we were awakened by our weather alert radio. It was warning us of thunderstorms. We didn't think too much about it, but later our daughter called saying her drive to work which usually takes 25 minutes, today took her 2 hours. She had been delayed by trees across the roads and witnessed lots of storm damage. At the time we were living in our daughter's basement north of Birmingham while our motorhome was having our stacked washer and dryer installed with new cabinetry done near Red Bay, Al.
As most of you know later that day the South and particular Alabama was hit by numerous, very destructive tornadoes. We saw the wall cloud passing over the adjacent ridge near our daughter's home. We were very fortunate and did not have any damage in our neighborhood.
We went to the basement (our safe place) several times that night. Between driving to Red Bay to pick up our RV and picking up our truck in Birmingham, we witnessed such destruction in many areas of Alabama. Death toll in our state is 236 and could be higher as they clear through rubble.
We have two generators that we had been using with our 5th wheel. We were able to loan them out to two different families who were without power. Allan has taken his chain saw and helped clear roads and help people with downed trees on their property. Neighbors, friends, churches and strangers are all pitching in to help those who are affected by the storms. There are many sites where churches and groups are taking donations of money, as well as, food, clothing and all kinds of supplies to help victims who have lost literally everything. It is hard to imagine how many people have been affected by the tornadoes that ripped through Alabama and neighboring states. It will take years to rebuild. Our hearts and prayers go out to these people who were affected by this tragedy.
On a lighter note, one morning before the storms I heard some geese honking thinking they were flying overhead. To my surprise I found a family of geese in the back yard. Mama and Papa had four babies. Three were keeping pretty close to their parents, but one was doing his own thing.
