On Saturday, Don drove us to Sedona. The elevation was higher, temperature cooler, and pollen count lower. I felt much better while there. This pollen has given me fits. I have been vegetating, accomplishing nothing for over a week. This trip proved even more what I felt was allergy related.
We drove through Sedona which was quite touristy but it had some neat buildings.
On the way to Sedona we stopped to see Montezuma's Castle in the Verde Valley
This was very interesting how the people lived. Standing in the cliff recess this building was started in the 1100s. It was a 5 story, 20 room dwelling. Early settlers were amazed at this dwelling thinking it was Aztec thus named it Montezuma's Castle. In reality it was built by the Southern Sinagua farmers. There is another building which is deteriorated near by that is estimated as a 6 story apartment building with 45 rooms. The creek was a reliable source of water and fertile land on the terrace.
They were farmers but also had sufficient wild game to add to their diet. No one knows why these people abandoned their pueblos in the early 1400s.
We also visited Slide Rock State Park. This is where people come to swim in the white water over the smooth rocks. The water is very cold.
We stopped for lunch at a little deli store on the side of the road which reminded me of the country stores in Vermont. Good food.
We even saw snow on the mountains from a distance.
Today is preparation day for moving on Tuesday. We are leaving two days early in hopes to find a place with lower pollen count and we want to beat some of the wind and rain that is predicted on Thursday. Allan has dumped the tanks and added some fresh water for our journey across the desert.
