Lancaster County, Pa
We traveled to Roamers Retreat in Kinzer, Pa. We had a view of Amish farmland from our campsite. As soon as we got set up Allan took some pictures of a teenage boy plowing a field with four horses. This was just the introduction into the Amish lifestyle.
The next day we drove to Hershey, Pa so Jeanne could get her chocolate fix. There is quite a history that goes along with the Hershey factory and he was a very benevolent man to his workers and to the town. We went on a tour that showed how chocolate is harvested and produced into the chocolate that we know and eat frequently. Of course, they had the chocolate smell throughout the tour which ended in the chocolate shop where you could buy all kinds of chocolate products. Next we went to a chocolate tasting seminar where we learned the way they made the different tastes and consistencies. We had small samples of different types of chocolate, not enough to satisfy you, but enough to make you go buy some. Notice the picture of Jeanne holding the 5 pound Hershey bar; we did not buy it.
We took the back roads through many Amish farms. The aroma of fresh cow manure was very apparent. We saw them loading and spreading the manure on the fields with a horse drawn manure spreader. We saw a man plowing a field with 12 horses. We were very impressed. We met several horse drawn carriages along the road and passed farms that had Amish products for sale.(honey, cheese, quilts, furniture and buildings and much more) We stopped at a farmers market and bought some fresh vegetables and a pie for Allan. We also stopped at a road side stand and bought a loaf of bread which was delicious. Wish I had bought more. One night we went to an Amish restaurant and tried everything they had including shoe fly pie. We enjoyed our stay in Lancaster County.
