SEA LION CAVE

In between showers we pulled the slides in and hooked up and started driving up the coastline of Oregon. It rained on and off as we traveled. We passed a long area of sand dunes between the highway and the ocean.

Oregon has many state parks and recreation areas along the coast. There were not many places for us to pull off with this big rig to take pictures. The farther north that we traveled the more coastal mountains and curves we encountered.

We traveled cautiously along the wet roads. We passed one car in the ditch and we did not want a similar mishap.

We visited Sea Lion Caves, the largest Stellar sea lion cave in the world.

The highway and parking lot were on top of a cliff and we had to take an elevator down to the cave level. They estimated there were 250 sea lions in the cave today. The ocean waves come crashing into the cave where the sea lions find a rock or ledge to get out of the weather and take a nap. How they could nap is beyond me because it was so noisy. Were they discussing the current weather conditions?? There is a viewing area where you can get the full effect of sounds and odors of the sea lions and the ocean. The sea lions are found in the caves in the colder months, but as the temperatures rise they can be found outside along the coastline for mating season and raising their pups. This is their website and they have a web cam you can view.http://sealioncaves.com/home/

So many places we could see the ocean's waves crashing against the rocks, spewing up in the air.

This is my first try at videos with my camera. Watch the water. There is a huge bull sea lion heading for the little island of rocks. Sorry it was rather dark in areas. We were not allowed to use any kind of lights or flashes.Click on the picture.

Besides the sea gulls there were migratory birds that appear in April for mating season called pigeon guillemots.

There was a lighthouse nearby that we were able to get a picture of.
