The area we just left, southeastern Missouri and northwestern Tennessee, was the center of a series of earthquakes in late 1811 and early 1812. New Madrid, Missouri, where the New Madrid fault line is located, is reported to have experienced the strongest earthquake ever recorded. There were numerous quakes and after shocks which were felt as far as Canada and Washington, DC. The Mississippi River changed its course and Reelfoot Lake was formed. Lots of destruction occurred but the area was sparsely populated and there were no census records for this area so no one knows how many people lost their lives. Must have been a scary time.
We spent the night in Jackson, Tn. This town has really grown. There are several colleges located here. We visited Max Blackman, a classmate of mine, who is recovering from surgery.
Today we drove to Red Bay, Alabama. Sweet Home Alabama. It felt so good to be here. The humidity has dropped to 59% with a temperature of 89 which included a nice breeze. Such relief! We plan to visit the Tiffin factory tomorrow.
